Why Do You Write?

Writers, right? We think too much.

Trust me, I know. We’ve all got big ideas. We’re thinker types, easily distracted and eager to share our passion, ideally in books, or at least on socials if we’re procrastinating.

We’re compulsive sharers. On a mission.

So, why do we want strangers to read what we write?

What makes us want to capture our passion in a bottle? And then sell it to people for money?

The simplest answer, I think, is that we’re all readers, and some amazing book, or books, convinced us to try and give it a go. We read that wonderful author’s work full of heart and soul, and not only was it worth our time, it was so much worthier than the kajillion other books out there. It made us stop and take notice of our lives.

And of course we figured writing like that requires time and effort–writing, rewriting, refining, polishing, and ultimately packaging it for the right audience. But it wouldn’t be all about making money or even “being a success.” We simply wanted to write for the love of it. So, while we knew we’d eventually need an editor and maybe a publisher (although there are plenty of different options for that these days), we set out to try and share our own ideas. And along the way we protected it, even as it began to be shaped in ways we didn’t initially expect.

Bottom line, we write to be read. And I’ve learned books sell best when readers are won over and feel compelled to share it.

So, I believe a good editor doesn’t merely clean it up and fix what isn’t working. He ensures your words can’t be ignored.

Are you a writer who hopes to share an incredible message,

but you’re not sure how to ensure that?

For over 24 years, I’ve edited books for traditional publishers and freelance authors. I share a weekly email about my writing and editing process that ensures your words can’t be ignored. I also help writers refine their work as an editor and coach–supportively, and responsively.

For coaching, editing, or an evaluation, email me at: micksilvaediting@gmail.com You can read about me, get writing motivation, the books I recommend, or learn how to create a proposal, and what you need to be published in the sidebar to the right.

I look forward to connecting with you more.

Mick, you really should put your blogs into a book along with your photos. They always touch me.
