Eight Random Things

I’ve been tagged by Cindy Woodsmall, who probably thinks herself pretty clever to weasel me into this silly game of posting 8 random things about myself. Oh well. What do I have to lose?

Here goes…

1. I exhibited obsessive compulsive tendencies for about a year as an 8-year-old, needing to touch each of my fingers together equally if any of them happened to touch: tips-to-thumbs, sides-to-sides, whatever. Yeah. Seriously.

2. I’ve never been to New York.

3. My recurring childhood nightmare of being kidnapped from my bedroom in the middle of the night was recently solved when my 4-year-old checked out a library book of Richard Scarry’s nursery rhymes in which a wolf breaks into a house and steals all the children in his big black bag. I hadn’t seen the book in over 25 years.

4. I don’t like frosting.

5. I generally try to read multiple books at once, a mix of fiction and nonfiction, so that I can evaluate the random connections and find different ideas according to the associated books I read them with. Not because I’m particularly intelligent, merely efficient.

6. I’ve never read a book I couldn’t put down. Except one.

7. I once showed Danny DeVito to his seat at a movie premiere in Westwood. He said, "Thanks."

8. I cried so much reading my vows at my wedding, I could barely get through them.

The Rules:
1. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits
about themselves.
2. People who are tagged need to write their own blog
about their eight things and post these rules.
3. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight
people to get tagged and list their names.
4. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them
they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

  1. I had a dream about a wolf last night, this post made me remember.
I think I’ll go analyze it now.

  2. Can I send a thank you card to Cindy Woodsmall? I got so tired of reading that mystery post over and over again that I don’t think I’ll ever care “whodunit” again!
(Actually I’ve been too self absorbed to notice much of anything, but any chance to give you a hard time is worth it in my book!)
I’m with you on the frosting, man, unless it’s french buttercream…and anyone who cries when they read their own writing – I mean, that’s the real deal, right? ;)

  3. …by the way, I have a new life’s goal – to write a book you can’t put down…
    (~smile~)

  4. Now that was worth waiting for!
Hmmm, clever? I hadn’t thought so, but now that you mention it . . . I did get an editor at a “big name” publisher to post eight random things about himself and he’s not even my editor:-o)
Your answers are GREAT–even made my dog come running to me in hopes of it being time to play since you had me laughing out loud.
It’s a time consuming little game, isn’t it?
    Thanks for playing!

These are great. Except the part about not being to NY… oh, my! So, come soon, and give me an excuse to go out and about… (we just took editor Mark Goodyear and his wife Amy around… what a marvelous time we had!)

  6. rachelle says:

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one silly enough to do this. And listen, bucko, we’ve got to get you to New York. What can you be thinking, avoiding it all these years???

  7. Did your folks take you to therapy for the finger-touching thing? Does writing about it make your fingers itch to touch once again? Even now, is your thumb whispering to your pinky, “Come on, you know you want to!”? Am I annoying you yet?
I love that you cried through your vows. Sweet.
We loved all the Richard Scarry books when our kids were growing up. Lowly Worm is George’s hero.
I’m not a fan of frosting in general–especially the nasty crisco+sugar+food coloring variety on kids’ birthday cakes. Gag. BUT I adore the frosting on Death by Chocolate cake. It contains exactly two ingredients: 9 oz. of very dark chocolate melted with 2/3 cup heavy cream and cooled to spreading consistency. Oh. Man. I think I’m going to dream about it tonight.

    LL!
I should’ve connected with you in NY! Was just there for BEA. Mick, you can’t be an editor if you haven’t been to NY. Come on, now.
The only frosting worth having: ganache.
Place 1 cup dark chocolate chips in microwaveable bowl. Add two TBS butter, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 Tbs. powdered sugar, 2 Tbs. heavy cream. Micro for 30 seconds. Stir. Do again. And one more time. Spread on cake. Or cookies. Or smear on face. Yum.

  9. Tina says:

I’m with MR, glad to finally read something other than the mystery post. And what fun reading it was!
Leave it to Mary to post a recipe…but my mouth is sort of watering right now…and the micro is fast and easy…
I agree on the frosting. That’s why my husband and I make a great pair. I scrape mine off the cake and he eats it. Why, his mom used to give him a whole can of frosting for his birthday and he would grab a spoon and dig in!
Oh, man! I just saw you tagged me.

  10. Because I don’t actually know eight different people (unless you can count multiple personalities as separate people) I cheated and threw my 8 things to Nicole a while back and then tossed them (in revised form) into a comment on Mair’s site under her “Tagged…” post, which became quite the little blog commenting party.
I’ve never been to New York either. The city, I mean. Does this mean I’m not a real editor, too? Please don’t tell the publishers I work with.
Love your book link, Mick. “The Sneetches and Other Stories” is my classic “couldn’t put it down” book, but my most recent cover-to-cover read was the not-so-brief “The Time Traveler’s Wife.” Ironically, it still took a long time to read.

  11. First of all, I don’t understand this phenomenon (if you say that word more than once or look at it too long, you convince yourself it’s wrong) of not liking frosting. When I make frosting, I always make a double batch: one for the cake, one for a snack. Of course, I don’t believe in crisco because of the partially hydrogenated crap, and who needs food coloring? But sugar and butter (and hopefully chocolate), who could go wrong?
Second of all, when do we see the wedding video of Mick blubbering?

  12. Mick says:

Hmm. Interesting thought, Heather. But I think that video’s going to stay off the Internet.
I should clarify that my understanding of common American “frosting” and “icing” does not share anything in common with ganache, butter cream, or Jeanne’s chocolate and cream concoction who I defy anyone to scrape off their cake.
But let’s not go much further into the distinctions here, lest someone start applying it to fiction tastes…

  13. L.L. Barkat says:

Mary… my loss! (Well, the dinner at Devi, an Indian restaurant with okra to-die-for was truly great… maybe you and I missing each other is your loss too? :)

  14. relevantgirl says:

Totally my loss, LL. Next time I’m in NY, I’ll be sure to connect.
    We can eat ganache together.

  15. Mr. Adrian Monk, you’re not alone.

  16. Gina says:

Okay, I know I’m late in reading this, but had to mention NY is my city. Well, actually Long Island is,(not a city, I know) where I grew up 30 miles from Manhattan. So if you ever need some insider information. What to do, where not to go, drop me an email! It’s a great place to visit. In fact I’m going there in about two weeks! Family reunion! Gulp! Say a prayer for me!
