Don’t Quit Your Day Job

A061_2 "I am a seven-foot-tall banana for a San Francisco–based fruit delivery company. I ride the train as the banana. I pass out bananas on the streets dressed as the banana. I get an awful lot of hugs as the banana, and more high-fives than anyone really has a right to."

"…Sometimes I think that no matter what I write, no matter how much I improve, no humorous essay will ever be able to compete with the sight of a middle-aged mom dressed as giant food."

Some special encouragement to all you brave authors out there who are sacrificing time, money, and dignity to survive and thrive.

See now? You don’t have to feel bad just because you can’t "survive" on your writing income. More importantly, are you thriving?

Hmmm, so this means I need to don a costume to survive/thrive in this writing gig? Is that the same as editing? Do you edit in costume?

  2. That’s funny, because in my day job, people often look at me as though I was dressed as a seven-foot-tall banana.

  3. To survive is an issue of the body.
To thrive is a matter of the heart.
Sometimes the shepherd boy, even though he can read, still chooses to sleep with the sheep.
The trail itself holds treasures that are not easily quantified. In the end the dream we thought was foolishness is the one that brought us to the end of all things.

Now there’s a job I hadn’t considered. Thanks for the tip.
(On another note, I came back from Mount Hermon a little perplexed… I thought that Shannon was fiction and you non-fiction, yet some author who knows the business well told me it’s the opposite. What’s the real deal? Curious. Also curious… are you going to Calvin this year?)

  5. Mick says:

Laura, Shannon is senior editor of fiction and I do handle mainly nonfiction. But we’re all pretty versatile at WaterBrook.
And I can’t miss Calvin. It’s just too important.

  6. L.L. Barkat says:

    Thanks for clearing that up.
Maybe I’ll see you at Calvin!
